Wendell Castle Starfish Console Table

An exceptional console table by Wendell Castle (1932-2018), titled ‘Voyage’, executed in polychromed jelutong and mahogany with floating, free-form top in chip-carved and stained walnut. The stack laminated base was shaped with a chainsaw prior to hand tooling and finishing.

A deliberately monumental Castle design that projects authority without overpowering a room, while simultaneously conveying opposing concepts: motion and stillness, lightness and mass. Epitomizing Castle’s sense of wit and fantasy and, as always, his insistence on denying a practical distinction between art and design, the table becomes a logical choice for a curated interior or gallery context.

Signed ‘Castle 95’. From an important, private collection of American Craft furniture, this table is unique and is pictured/documented in Wendell Castle’s Catalog Raisonné.

Provenance: Peter Joseph Gallery, NYC.
